The defining decade 20217/8/2023 The concentration of GHGs in the earth’s atmosphere is directly linked to the average global temperature on Earth. There are some basic well-established scientific links: As populations, economies and standards of living grow, so does the cumulative level of greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions. But after more than a century and a half of industrialization, deforestation, and large scale agriculture, quantities of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have risen to record levels not seen in three million years. Greenhouse gases occur naturally and are essential to the survival of humans and millions of other living things, by keeping some of the sun’s warmth from reflecting back into space and making Earth livable. The Human Fingerprint on Greenhouse Gases Without drastic action today, adapting to these impacts in the future will be more difficult and costly. From shifting weather patterns that threaten food production, to rising sea levels that increase the risk of catastrophic flooding, the impacts of climate change are global in scope and unprecedented in scale. Climate Change is the defining issue of our time and we are at a defining moment. Stonewords by Pam Conrad7/7/2023 The truth, however, is that Zoe Louise lived in Zoe`s house a century ago, and her ghost has returned to solve a terrible mystery. But in changing the past, must she also change the present? If she saves her friend` s life, will she lose Zoe Louise forever?Zoe`s grandparents think that Zoe Louise is Zoe`s imaginary friend. Time is running out for Zoe` s frightening ways. And although Zoe Louise never grows up, she is changing in dreadful, frightening ways. From that day on - living in the same house, separated by a staircase and a century - Zoe and Zoe Louise have been an important and permanent part of each other` s lives. The first time Zoe met Zoe Louise, Zoe was four years old. Audrey’s parents are also going through a divorce and Holly Bourne portrayed the conflicting feelings and raw emotions of that experience so well. There are some really well-written sex scenes and conversations about sex and the anxieties around experiencing it for the first time. So many YA romance stories almost feel like a fantasy in a way, because there are often a lot of clichés and predictable endings, but It Only Happens in the Movies feels so real and relatable. Holly Bourne is really honest about the ups and downs of being a teen. As much as I do enjoy a good romance flick, they don’t explore any of the messy bits of relationships and can be so predictable! The book examines all the clichés you find in romance films and how unrealistic they are. What I loved about It Only Happens in the Movies is that it’s fun and humorous, while also giving a really realistic portrayal of teen life. I wish her books had been out when I was a teen because they are just so good and really relatable, and so amazingly feminist too. She has a way of writing YA contemporary books that just reads so naturally and is really easy to connect to. Once again, I found myself sucked into the story. This is my second book by Holly Bourne and she is definitely a talented writer. Notable American Women by Ben Marcus7/7/2023 The effect is akin to viewing the world from behind glass, or from behind a layer of shed skin, as the fictional Marcus does when he wears the empty husk of his sister. Yet throughout, the narrators maintain a cold distance between themselves and the events they're describing, reflecting their lack of emotion through an objective tone and placing the reader squarely in the emotional vacuum in which the fictional Marcus is raised. Most accurately classified as science fiction (though often darkly humorous), Women maintains an unsettling balance between absurdity and horror, shifting its subject from the academic to the domestic. The strange and fantastical novel is composed primarily of the fictional Marcus's explanation of the leaders, rules, and history of the Silentists, as well as a description of his youth spent in the group's Ohio compound as a test subject and sire for a planned "emotion-free" society. The author places himself within the novel as a character whose mother joins and hosts a feminist group known as the Silentists, whose goal is to put "an end to motion and noise" for the purpose of complete "emotion removal." Marcus demonstrates an extraordinary stylistic ability in this challenging and bizarre account of family life within an oppressive cult. For the ambition and creativity he displays alone, Ben Marcus has written a very memorable debut novel with Notable American Women. The fate of stars sd simper7/6/2023 The author’s overuse of the word “stole” would drive me insane if I had to read it but hearing it throughout the last third of the book scarred me for life. This book probably makes for a better reading experience than it does in audio format. If you don’t mind Barbie-goes-Valley-Girl voices then you’ll be fine. Well, the narrator’s choice of voice for the mermaid almost made me stop listening. Oh, and mermaids! Enough said." Want to know more? So, continue reading this PocketBook and find out what drives us to make irrational decisions! About the book "Predictably Irrational" Illogical and invisible forces can hinder our rationality and influence us not only to make silly mistakes, but also to repeat them. Not all of our decisions are well thought out, intelligent and rational, and furthermore, we are not in complete control when we need to make an important choice. As much as there are those who believe that a person can live only in a rational way, the experiments of the behavioral economist and author of the book "Predictably Irrational", Dan Ariely, showed that this is not the way things work. |
